The Ugliest Kitchen in All the Land

This is our kitchen--it is the ugliest kitchen in all of Norway, possibly in all of Europe. Our house was built close to 100 years ago, and then extensively remodeled in the 1960's...ugh! The kitchen cabinets are this weird green, wood grain laminate, the backsplash is made up of orange tiles with huge green flowers, and the flooring is disgusting peel and stick orange linoleum tiles. It is beyond awful. Sadly, we are renting this house, so it doesn't make sense for us to make to many home improvements, especially given how expensive everything is here. (We did rip up the tomato orange shag carpet in the master bedroom and refinished the pine floor--that was a non-negotiable for me! It cost us over $1000 to rent the industrial sander and buy the polyeurethane and sandpaper, plus the lovely deep blue paint to cover the brown walls!)
In typically optimistic Norwegian style, our friends here try to reassure us that the retro look is very popular right now--our kitchen is very in style! First of all, I don't care how trendy orange and avocado are, I will never like them. Second of all, I could deal with the kitchen if it was new and fresh and painted unappealing "retro" colors, but our kitchen is old and vile--the cabinet doors under the sink are so warped that they don't close, some of the drawers no longer slide in and out smoothly, and the revolting peel and stick tiles on the floor are unsticking and peeling up. In the U.S. there are all kinds of home improvement shows and contests to make over truly hideous rooms--is there anything like that in Norway? Does Oprah's interior designer, Nate, do trans-Atlantic room make-overs?
Oh well, enough compaining, I'm going to venture into my ever-so-foul kitchen for some chocolate!

Hi Emily! How long will you be staying in Norway?

At the moment we're renting a flat here in france. However when we moved in the flat was horrible, as in very very dirty. It has been an holiday flat for 20 years where nobody has cleaned properly. There were dirty wallpaper all over the house, some dating back to the 70's with orange and brown colours!! The real estate agency paid a company to clean out the flat before we moved in but the walls still remained dirty.

Since it was our only option we had to take the flat but we invested time and money in paint. I basically stripped the place down when Lorenzo was at work and in the evening we painted it together. Only when we had finished we felt we could live there without being infected with a 20-years collection of dirt. The owner even left the cupboards full of old food. Yuk!

However changing the kitchen is much more costly than a couple of buckets of paint! It looks really cosy though with a fireplace in the kitchen!! =)

    Have a nice weekend!

Hi Astrid, we don't know for sure how long we will be here, but we did sign a 3 year lease on the house. (It is owned by Kevin's company, so obviously if something goes awry with his work situation, I'm sure we could break the lease!) The fact that the company owns the house makes it a little awkward--we were promised certain repairs that have not occurred yet. We actually made a list of things which were unacceptable (loose wires hanging out of the wall, leaking dishwasher, doors that don't shut properly, an outbuilding which is collapsing on its foundation, etc.) and one day someone in a company car came out and...painted our garage? What the hell?
So we're trying really hard not to be "ugly Americans" and too demanding, but we are very disappointed by the way the property has been managed. Still, beggars can't be choosers, I doubt too many landlords would have allowed 2 big, naughty dogs and several cats! And the setting is perfect, a huge yard for the dogs, surrounded by woods.
I am slowly painting all the brown and orange trim white, and we have completely redone our master bedroom and the guest room, so at least we can sleep in a clean, beautiful haven! I think the kitchen could be gorgeous, with the fireplace and the wood walls--if the company would spring for some cheapie white IKEA cupboards and new flooring!
It sounds like you have done lots of beautiful things in your apartment--it is wonderful to create something for yourself (and to wow everyone with all the "before" and "after" photos! Emily

    Hi again,

actually I might put some before and after photos of our flat. I should have the before's of at least the yukky toilet and the kitchen.

All we have done really is to paint it all but it makes all the difference!
